It has been the focus of the Family Care Network to provide the best, most effective therapeutic foster care services to high-needs foster children and youth on the Central Coast since the agency’s inception in 1987. In 22 years, the Family Care Network has grown to provide 17 unique programs for high-risk children, youth and families, with the intent purpose of strengthening individuals and families. The agency prides itself on being outcome-focused and needs-driven, serving over 2,000 children, youth and families in both San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties in 2008/09 with an overall success rate of 96%.

State of California cuts Foster Care Programs by 10%:
As some of you may be aware, California’s recently passed budget includes a 10% rate reduction to private therapeutic foster care providers, including the Family Care Network. This cut will result in approximately $300,000 in lost revenue for the agency during its current fiscal year. The agency, however, is strongly committed to maintaining the highest quality of care in spite of this new fiscal challenge. Recently, KSBY evening news highlighted how the State budget crisis will effect our agency and the vulnerable foster children in our care. Community and Agency Response:
Partnering with the community to help meet needs is a number one priority of the Family Care Network. Our foster parents and children live in our community, and it is our goal to ensure that they receive the necessary care and treatment services in order to be successful right here at home. In light of this new fiscal challenge, the agency will be implementing the following to help bridge the $300,000 budget gap:

  • Look to our community to immediately help us raise $100,000 to ease the anticipated cuts
  • Implement multiple cuts or reductions in non mission-critical expenses, seriously               “tightening our belt,” without compromising our quality of services
  • Enhance fundraising activities throughout the year
  • Work to expand services in Santa Barbara County in order to meet additional needs with little increase in costs through economy of scale

We are determined to continue providing the highest quality of care to those in need in our community. We believe that, with your support, we can Change a Child’s Life Story and we can weather this fiscal storm with continued excellence.
